Weekend at Changi Village and Ubin [Dec. 2nd, 2009|12:19 am]
No one ever talks about how there is no soundtrack, no fanfare, no drum roll. Unceremoniously and without warning, a dream is fulfilled.

I had a sweet weekend: we had an enclosed balcony to look out to sea, just. We watched tv, swam on the rooftop, cycled on Ubin, ate lots of hawker food, walked around, went to the gym, enjoyed the rainshower and snuggled. We didn't try the wine sampler of six good wines or walk along the beach.

A summary of food opinion:
  • Charlie's Corner and Hanamco had a variety of draft beers and fresh western food. They are both owned by the same people and CC is cheaper.
  • Bumbu Village is a memorable Indonesian barbecue stall in the food centre. A gentle man wearing a songkok, grills seafood, served with flavourful rice and soup. I would like to eat it again, before foodie hordes descend.
  • The fried oyster from the bbq chicken wing stall was crispy and fragrant; the accompanying chilli wasn't. Note to self: get the chicken wing chilli next time.
  • The Indian coffeeshop in the middle of the row of Indian coffeeshops had good maggi mee goreng.
  • On Ubin, old Sin Lam Huat's popcorn squid did not disappoint.
  • I have tried all the nasi lemak stalls in the food centre over the years and found nothing remarkable about them. If you are lucky, the rice or food happens to be warm because of high traffic, that's all.
  •  The Changi chwee kueh was more oily but still alright.
